If you have found “the one”, you know what I’m talking about. Everyone talks about when you do find that person, you somehow just know. It’s this beautiful sense of security mixed with nerves and a love for which you don’t know quite how to put into words. You find yourself thinking of them all the time and having this desire to be around them everyday. Which winds up distracting you from the everyday norm you’ve known for so long. But it’s such a warm feeling, that you simply wish to embrace it and move beyond the norm your life has always been.
Let’s talk about a personal experience, being my own journey to marriage. I started out a career girl. I got my job free lancing with MYD at only 23 and it was a dream. The very next year I started taking my own clients at the studio during the week. Things were falling into place so perfect for my career and it looked so good. I have always adored weddings and doing a brides hair on her big day is magical. Ironically, the venue I went to do the very first wedding I did with MYD, is less than ten minutes from where I now live with my husband. Where he actually moved to only a month after I worked that wedding. And I remember that beautiful bride’s day and how love just flowed from her so naturally. It was the beginning of my love for what I do and for that I am grateful.
However, I’m secretly a closet hopeless romantic. Just ask my husband, I am a total mush and can do the sappiest things. So, even before landing my dream job and finding the guy of my dreams, I knew that one day I wanted to get married. I had no idea where that guy was, but I knew he was out there somewhere. So, also being of the savvy money management mindset, I started putting away small tips I’d get at the salon I was working at. I remember in my mind thinking that this specific money was going to go in this little bag to one day (hopefully) go towards my wedding to that guy of my dreams. Perhaps I’m too optimistic, but let me just share that it was the smartest thing I think I’ve ever done. I didn’t constantly put money in there, but here and there I would just set aside a few dollars and they started to add up.
Nearly six months after that first wedding I did with MYD, I met my now husband. I had NO idea that was the guy I was going to marry. I was in this “I don’t need a man, I have my career” state of mind after being hurt by someone else. The hopeless romantic in me was really feeling blue and wanting to protect herself. But as soon as I walked away from that first encounter with him, there was just this feeling. I wanted to know more and spend time with him, which for me was strange for that phase I was in. Fast forward nearly a year and a half later through our relationship, he proposed. That little bag that I had been throwing just a couple dollars at here and there, had collected just over 2,000 dollars! And with as much as weddings are these days, we were both so excited we had something to start off with.
So, if you’re not in your engagement yet, but have that person that you simply can’t see your life without, I encourage you to start sitting aside any extra money you might have here and there. Even if maybe one week you skip a starbucks run, sit that five dollars aside and smile at yourself for starting small on something that will one day be huge!
Tune in next week when I chat about wedding planning!
