My Wedding Experience: The Wedding!

This is a blog post series, be sure to read Part 1 & Part 2!

Remember that feeling every year, the night before the first day of school?  How there’s excitement of something new and sleeping is hard because you’re excited to see your friends and see what that new year will bring?  Take that feeling and multiply it by maybe 1000.  There were so many nerves and excitement going on that my maid of honor and one of my bridesmaids stayed in the room with me the night before and we were still awake at midnight so we had a countdown to the wedding day, just like New Years Eve.  Right after our mini celebration, we turned out the lights and I tried hard to get to sleep.  It felt like it took forever!  At that point I wasn’t even thinking about the actual wedding.  All I could dream about was my groom standing at the end of the aisle and getting to him.  I eventually did get to sleep. Dreaming all night of rain and rivers and water.  Ironic after what I woke to the next morning.

Just as the light started brightening my room, my eyes popped open and there was no way I was getting back to sleep.  I heard a drizzling of rain and got up to go look out the window.  I was staying in the bungalow on the farm, and right across the way from where I stood was our tree.  That tree that we fell in love with our first visit to the farm.  And all around it was rain and clouds.  Not a hard rain either.  Just that annoying drizzle of a rain that if it would just lighten a little you could go outside, but it’s too much when it’s happening.  We had to make the call for the wedding to be outside by the tree or inside the barn by 9 am.  We all looked at our phones on multiple radars only to see on each one, Hurricane Matthew’s first strand of storms easing further and further into North Carolina.  For a moment I got off to myself and just let it all out with a really good cry.  What else can you do?  The most important thing about that day was not that tree I loved so much.  But walking away as the wife of the man at the end of the aisle, that I love so dearly.  So I gathered myself together and faced the day head on.

16122308_10154899240568454_1472735734_o

Between my parents getting us a sapling and our officiant being amazing and changing up our ceremony, we still incorporated the tree theme.  I worked all morning on setting up our decor in the barn and trying to rework everything now that it was all in one space rather than two separate places.  Then finally came the time where my maid of honor found me and said “Ok Megan, it’s time for you to shower and then get hair and makeup done”.  Those butterflies that sometimes overwhelm you, took over.  This was completely abnormal for me because I’m always the one doing hair.  But, once I sat down in the chair, it really started all sinking in.

To all my past brides, I know now what was going through your mind.  And to all my future brides, know that those moments you are getting your hair and makeup done are the moments it truly starts feeling real.  All other parts of the day it’s like this fog.  “I’m getting married later today?” but you don’t fully feel it yet.  You sit down in that chair and suddenly it changes to “I’m getting married in a couple hours!!!”  The surreal feeling that everything you’ve spent the past year on, is about to all happen hits and the amount of emotions going on in your mind is huge.  For me, I became really quiet and everything was all in my head.  It was more calming that way, especially since the day wasn’t going according to plan.  It helped to tune out everything and get into the realization that everything I had done for the past year was about to happen.

We chose not to have a first look.  Every couple is different and for some a first look is so special.  For us, we wanted to savor every moment of walking down the aisle and him seeing me the first time that day at that time.  My favorite part of a wedding has always been the groom’s reaction.  You can tell everything about the relationship when you look at how sweet he looks staring at his bride.  But wow, did my groom have a special reaction.  We all know our guys and if they are more aps to showing their emotions or holding them in and savoring them for alone time.  My groom cried the entire ceremony!  And it was the sweetest thing that I had ever experienced.

It made all those emotions I felt all day just melt away and the joy of being there with him in a barn with a hurricane blowing through was everything.  We had so many people not show up.  There was maybe fifty people max.  But after all the things that didn’t go the way we envisioned it, we couldn’t get upset at the fact we didn’t have many guests. Once everything was over, we got in his car and drove away in a state of sheer bliss realizing we were officially husband and wife.  It’s this euphoric feeling that you spent so much time planning such a huge life event and the purpose of the event is finally official and life has completely changed.  My best advice for the day of your wedding?  Savor every precious moment and don’t feel like everything has to go EXACTLY as is was planned.  Sometimes things happen that make it look like it may not be for the best, but it turns out to be the very best thing you could have hoped for!

I will be back next week to talk all about how life is after being married!

MYD Styled Shoot: Spanish Inspired Wedding

Hello MYD Beauties!
I am thrilled to share with you a styled shoot that I helped coordinate. This shoot is so special to me because I had such a strong vision for it as we were planning. The idea behind this shoot was inspired by The Bradfords rustic design. The grounds themselves give off a feeling of a vintage love story. Some of these images could have been lost in the pages of a family photo album, while the table settings and decor bring us back into modern day. Beautifully shot by Nikki at Fancy This Photography and styled by Alexias Bridal in downtown Raleigh, this styled shoot is perfect inspiration for a bride wanting a little Spanish flair.

Its rare you find a dress with such personality, and this gown says everything; Classic, romantic, passionate. Paired perfectly here with an effortless red lip and soft curls. The hair and makeup was styled to showcase a nod to tradition with a contemporary ease.

A lush bouquet of fresh flowers is the perfect accessory for the stunning bride.

The details behind the shoot were all inspired by a desire for trendy concepts but keeping with Spanish traditions. The Greenhouse Picker Sisters delivered with these unique vintage chairs; One for the bride and one for the groom. The rustic table and chairs harken back to a time of family celebration.

The outdoor sangria bar for two is a truly romantic place for a quiet serenade session. The patio of the Bradford provided the perfect getaway for this young couple to quietly share a moment. The ceremony however is held in the garden area where a trellis provided the perfect space for an intimate ceremony with family and friends.

The guests would be treated with a simple vanilla cake garnished with fresh flowers, rosemary and oranges.

Bright flowers provided by The Flower Cupboard are the perfect accent piece to the dining table. Sangria, fresh fruit and succulents adorn the table in a welcoming fashion. A lavish menu is immaculately paired with table settings lovingly hand crafted by Maghon of All She Wrote Notes.

My Wedding Experience: Planning

Be sure to check out my post about saving up BEFORE you get engaged HERE.

Planning your wedding can easily become the main event in your life during the time leading up to the wedding.  I know for me it became a daily routine.  I was turning down hanging out with friends to be choosing what kind of flowers we should have.  I was condensing my work schedule to only very specific days and times to be crafting those other days.  It was a ton of work, but so much fun!

If you can afford it and don’t have much time, hire a wedding planner.  The amount of things they  can take off your never ending list of things to do, is wonderful!  I, however, chose to be a DIY bride.  Personal opinion, I truly think either is fine.  There is no right or wrong way to plan a wedding.  The question is, do you want a good amount of help or do you want a lot to do on your own plate?  So, what did I do as a DIY bride?  I’m so glad you asked!  Let me share what helped me out so much.

We live in a day where Pinterest is a girl’s best friend.  Let’s all go ahead and admit that before even finding a boyfriend, we have at least sat and gazed at the dreamy photos that fill the wedding section of Pinterest.  How can we not?  Magical aisles leading down to exuberant alters filled with beaming brides and grooms.  Flower ensembles that make you gush at their site.  And let’s not forget my favorite;  Those amazing lanterns they release at the end of Tangled, where wedding parties have literally released them at the end of the wedding!  There are so many things to make you gush and squeal on Pinterest, that it’s honestly overwhelming.

Before engagement, it’s a perfect dreamy setting where your imagination can run rampant.  After engagement, you begin to realize you have to narrow down all these dreamy, wonderful ideas into things that actually fit in your budget.  So, when I logged on, I looked at my board I already had dealing with weddings (maybe I’m too much of a hopeless romantic, but I had a ton of pins already that fit my dream wedding) and started seeing what went together and what felt like it fit both my fiance and I.  I very quickly figured out that a farm was going to be the best setting for us.  I had dreamed for ages of getting married by a big, beautiful tree, outside right close to sunset.  And Pinterest helped expand that dream.

Next, we found our venue.  And let me just give them a small shout out, Summerfield Farms in Summerfield NC was completely worth the hour and fifteen minute drive because it was EVERYTHING we ever wanted.  You know how it is, when you have that specific idea that you just can’t see anything else?  Summerfield Farms was our dream.  They had that big, beautiful tree that made us both gasp in awe as we rode up to it.  We knew the moment we looked at it, THAT was where we were going to tie the knot.  It was everything.  And the reception area was this gorgeous barn with a stage and a fire pit outside!  Complemented by an attached tent for dinner.  We drove away ecstatic at the fact we had found our dream venue, the biggest part of planning was done and now we could look into the little details.

16118618_10154894189678454_947310831_n

My next move I think was the most helpful one for me as a DIY girl.  If you choose to have a wedding planner, this may not be for you.  But I bought multiple wedding planning and wedding budget books off Amazon.   The beauty in Amazon is you can purchase gently used books for over half of what they originally cost.  So I got to work learning about budgeting and figuring out how much to spend on each area of a wedding.  I really thought I knew everything that was part of a wedding.  I’m at weddings most weekends doing brides hair.  It can’t be that hard, right?  It’s not that it’s hard, it’s the fact there are SO many details.  In fact, there are some that I just cut out from the beginning.  But still, there are certain aspects when throwing a wedding you have to stick to.  And the books I chose to help me, played a huge part in planning and helping to keep me on track.

16118580_10154894189668454_471057644_n
And so the process continues over the months leading up to the wedding.  I was lucky enough to have a Maid of Honor who dived right in and helped me at any moment I needed her.  The week leading up to the wedding was a bit hectic.  I had everything planned.  All of the things I made for the wedding was finished.  I’d made my own bouquet, boutonnieres, flowers for decor, centerpieces, yard games (let’s just say making Giant Jenga and Corn Hole is very cost effective but VERY time consuming) and decor for our pie table and Polaroid table.  16128927_10154894189673454_1565435559_n I thought everything was going to be super easy and we’d just finish up all the little details and everything would be great.  Then I get a message from one of my bridesmaids that she didn’t think she should be a bridesmaid anymore.  Naturally, I have a minor “freak out” moment on my Maid of Honor.  When it came to my own wedding, the hairstylist in me came out and I was all about even numbers.  So this took my count of 6 bridesmaids down to 5.  Fast forward a couple days, I have a friend who personally steps up and offers to stand in as my 6th bridesmaid simply because she is that awesome and understands my weird ways of wanting even numbers.  So everything was ready and we entered into wedding week fully ready, with everything finished.  Now, if only we had known that of all weekends in October, our weekend was going to be the weekend a hurricane decided to blow through.

I’ll be back next week to tell you all about the actual wedding day!
XoXo

MYD Health & Beauty: Amazing Grass

Hi MYD Beauties!

amazinggrass

This post is all about beginning your morning with a fresh and healthy start. I think that it’s safe to say many of us have a busy schedule and it can be hard to find the time for ourselves. I don’t know about you, but there are many mornings when the first thing that I think of when I wake up is COFFEE. There is nothing quite like having a fresh brew of coffee in the morning, which is why it was pretty difficult for me to transition over to drinking wheat grass.

Yes, wheat grass…Amazing Grass Green Superfood to be exact. Of course the first few days I would follow with a coffee soon after thinking that the wheat grass wouldn’t give me the extra jolt I needed. To my surprise, within a week I noticed that my overall stamina and energy had vastly improved and now it’s a part of my morning regimen!

amazinggrasscontents

There was a trial and error when it came to trying out the flavors and I soon discovered that lemon-lime is by far my favorite flavor. This specific product is 100% vegan, gluten free, and 1 scoop is equivalent to 4-5 servings of deep green leafy vegetables. I like to freeze this product and I have it with ice-cold water first thing in the morning. That’s not to say I totally quit drinking coffee, it’s just not the first thing that I have when I wake up. I also recommend adding a scoop of wheat grass to smoothies or juices! Especially since the taste is very “earthy” and took some time for me to get used to.

After a couple of weeks drinking the wheat grass daily, I also noticed an improvement in my skin. I have normal to sensitive skin with minor breakouts here and there, but I noticed my complexion looked healthier. As a makeup artist, that made me feel super excited because I just love a good glow!  Not only does it give you a boost of energy because of its digestive enzymes and probiotics, its nutritious greens promotes detoxification and boosts your immune system. I highly recommend this product!

Cheers to healthy living!

My Wedding Experience: Pre-Engagement

If you have found “the one”,  you know what I’m talking about.  Everyone talks about when you do find that person, you somehow just know.  It’s this beautiful sense of security mixed with nerves and a love for which you don’t know quite how to put into words.  You find yourself thinking of them all the time and having this desire to be around them everyday.  Which winds up distracting you from the everyday norm you’ve known for so long.  But it’s such a warm feeling, that you simply wish to embrace it and move beyond the norm your life has always been.

Let’s talk about a personal experience, being my own journey to marriage.16118061_10154894194168454_702846522_n  I started out a career girl.  I got my job free lancing with MYD at only 23 and it was a dream.  The very next year I started taking my own clients at the studio during the week.  Things were falling into place so perfect for my career and it looked so good.  I have always adored weddings and doing a brides hair on her big day is magical.  Ironically, the venue I went to do the very first wedding I did with MYD, is less than ten minutes from where I now live with my husband.  Where he actually moved to only a month after I worked that wedding.  And I remember that beautiful bride’s day and how love just flowed from her so naturally.  It was the beginning of my love for what I do and for that I am grateful.

However, I’m secretly a closet hopeless romantic.  Just ask my husband, I am a total mush and can do the sappiest things.  So, even before landing my dream job and finding the guy of my dreams, I knew that one day I wanted to get married.  I had no idea where that guy was, but I knew he was out there somewhere.  So, also being of the savvy money management mindset, I started putting away small tips I’d get at the salon I was working at.  I remember in my mind thinking that this specific money was going to go in this little bag to one day (hopefully) go towards my wedding to that guy of my dreams.  Perhaps I’m too optimistic, but let me just share that it was the smartest thing I think I’ve ever done.  I didn’t constantly put money in there, but here and there I would just set aside a few dollars and they started to add up.

16122309_10154894194303454_1950784521_o

Nearly six months after that first wedding I did with MYD,  I met my now husband.  I had NO idea that was the guy I was going to marry.  I was in this “I don’t need a man, I have my career” state of mind after being hurt by someone else.  The hopeless romantic in me was really feeling blue and wanting to protect herself.  But as soon as I walked away from that first encounter with him, there was just this feeling.  I wanted to know more and spend time with him, which for me was strange for that phase I was in.  Fast forward nearly a year and a half later through our relationship, he proposed.  That little bag that I had been throwing just a couple dollars at here and there, had collected just over 2,000 dollars!  And with as much as weddings are these days, we were both so excited we had something to start off with.
So, if you’re not in your engagement yet, but have that person that you simply can’t see your life without, I encourage you to start sitting aside any extra money you might have here and there.  Even if maybe one week you skip a starbucks run, sit that five dollars aside and smile at yourself for starting small on something that will one day be huge!

Tune in next week when I chat about wedding planning!
XoXo,
Megan
